Beyond Her Mesh explores what lies beneath the surfaces that shape human and machine perception. In 3D modelling, a “mesh” defines the structure of an object—collections of vertices, edges and faces that build our virtual worlds. These same systems, when trained on biased data, reproduce stereotypes, especially of women’s bodies, turning representation into distortion. The project asks: what substance lies behind the mesh that makes us more than points in space?
Female figures appropriated from art objects are reimagined via 3D scanning and simulation technologies. Their original materials are replaced with digital skin. These hybrid bodies, both human and algorithmic, are virtually photographed, painted and integrated into a virtual dimension accessible through augmented reality. Beyond Her Mesh proposes a series of portraits that exist between surface and essence, questioning how biases and blind spots shape the way we encounter the face of our world while searching for the living presence that persists beyond it.
