The virtual reality environment Fugitive Materials presents an austere moonlit landscape filled with dense ambient sounds and populated with giant flower forms that sway and reach out. Are they sentient? Monsters? Extraterrestrial deities? The longer the visitor focuses on one of these behemoths, the more it decompose, until finally it vanishes completely and the visitor is transported into a new place, the same but different. Part of the Flowers for Suzanne Clair universe, a series of works that use speculative fiction to create new imaginaries and forms of embodiment, Fugitive Materials explores cycles of flourishing and decay in natural and digital worlds. A version of this work was adapted for the styly platform in 2022 under the titel (De)Composition.
